International Trade Union Confederation–Nepal Affiliated Council (ITUC-NAC) was established with the aim of fostering a decent work environment in Nepal. It came into existence in 2004 at a rigorous initiative of mainly two major trade unions, GEFONT and NTUC. The organization has made an important contribution in ensuring a comparatively better working environment for all the workers in Nepal. It has offered expert guidance and assistance to housands of Nepali workers to improve their living conditions by creating a decent work environment for them. It aims at bringing the Nepali trade union movement to one platform for political discussion and agreement so that the country’s trade unions can collectively work towards ensuring the workers’ fundamental rights as stated in the national labor laws and in the ILO Convention.
ITUC-NAC is an umbrella organization that now consists of three of largest trade unions in Nepal—General Federation of Nepal Trade Unions (GEFONT), National Trade Union Confederation (NTUC) and All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF). ITUC-NAC has become the common platform for these three major trade unions in Nepal. However, it renders required support to other fringe trade unions too so that collaborative effort can eventually ensure landmark achievements in institutionalizing the right of all the workers in Nepal.
ITUC-NAC has been assisting in organizing almost all the existing trade unions in Nepal under the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre (JTUCC) since its establishment in 2007. Initially, JTUCC was jointly founded by the two major trade unions, NTUC and GEFONT with the sole purpose of bringing the Nepali trade union movement to one platform for political discussion and agreement. And, its formation was later consolidated in 2009 with the support from Royal Danish Embassy in Nepal. Since then, LO/FTF Council, a Danish trade union has been funding it for carrying out its organizational activities. This support has empowered JTUCC to bring other additional trade unions under its aegis. Today, altogether 11 national centres have become part of it and its organizational structure is still in its loose form. The existing trade unions under JTUCC are as follows:
