Workers Mobilization for Policy Interventions

The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), the All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF) and Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC), the three national centres under International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) jointly organized the Wider National Workers’ Conference on October 27-28, 2014 (Kartik 10-11, 2071) at Academy Hall, Kamaladi. The two-day event was held in co-operation with ILO/ACTRAV, LO/FTF Council, ITUC-AP and WSM (write the names in full). The conference extensively discussed the proposed Labor Act and workers agendas to be included in the new constitution, including the issues of Social Protection Systems. The conference primarily focused on formulating a joint policy document incorporating comments from 1,200 plant level union leaders from both formal and informal economies and representating various sectors like agriculture, construction, transportation, auto-machinics, teaching, civil and public administration and banking. The document is also to incorporate comments from textile indsutry that covers carpet, garment and jute manufacturers and all production related sectors such as sanitation, health services, airport management, sales, film industry etc. Shortly after three important presentations and remarks by the focal representatives from ILO, LO Sweden, the participating leaders were divided into nine groups and the views expressed in the group discussion were incorporated by the Steering Committee into the draft policy paper and presented before the hall.
